Wikipedia says it was a massive heart attack. RIP.

And there was me hoping for a reappearance in one of the Stargate films....I rmember when he was in SN I thought..oooo watch out Sammy its General Hammond and what with Janet Fraisier playing a doctor I was hoping for an appearance by Michael Shanks too! Don had been over here for a convention just a couple of weeks ago, or he was due to be over here anyway. I hope it wasn't that that brought it on. he'll be missed!
